Resentment is a negative emotion that can affect your well-being and your relationships. When you hold a grudge against someone, you are letting them have power over you. You are also sending a message to the world that you are unhappy and insecure.
People can sense your resentment, even if you try to hide it. They can see it in your body language, your tone of voice, and your facial expressions. And they will react accordingly. They may avoid you, criticize you, or treat you with disrespect. This will only make you feel more hurt and angry, and the cycle will continue.
You cannot control how others treat you, but you can control how you feel and think. You can choose to let go of your resentment and free yourself from its burden. You can choose to forgive and move on. You can choose to be happy and confident.
How can you do that? Here are three steps you can take to change your inner voice and break the cycle of resentment:
- Treat yourself as your own child. You deserve love and compassion, especially from yourself. Think of how you would comfort and support your own child if they were in your situation. What would you say to them? How would you help them? Do the same for yourself. Be kind and gentle with yourself. Don’t judge or blame yourself. Recognize your strengths and achievements. Celebrate your progress and growth.
- Imagine the kind of person you’d like to become. What kind of qualities do you admire in others? What kind of thoughts do they have? What kind of words do they say? What kind of attitudes do they never tolerate from others? Visualize yourself as that person. Act as if you already are that person. Fake it until you make it. You will soon notice a change in how you feel and how others perceive you.
- Know your values and live your life in accordance with them. What matters most to you in life? What are your core beliefs and principles? What are your goals and dreams? Align your actions with your values. Be authentic and honest with yourself and others. Don’t compromise your integrity for anyone or anything. Don’t let others dictate your life or your happiness. Stand up for yourself and your rights. Respect yourself and others will respect you too. Learn about the theory of Basic human values here:
If you want to change how others treat you, change how you treat yourself. You are the only person who can make that change. You are the only person who can decide how you want to live your life. You are the only person who can create your own happiness.

You can do it!
