I’ve asked myself this question (“Why Do I Feel Anxious for No Reason”) countless times.

But you know what?

No wonder we can’t find an answer.

The question is wrong.

There’s always a reason.

It may be within you, or it may be outside of you.

For example, your hormones may be out of balance.

Or someone may have told you something and that idea is still playing in your mind and bothering you.

After struggling with random anxiety for years, I created something I call the SMART method. It’s helped me and my students, and I think it can help you too.

Let’s do a quick recap of the method and then talk in more detail about the possible reasons that make you wonder: Why Do I Feel Anxious for No Reason (or no apparent reason).

SMART is an acronym for the following:

  • Save Yourself
  • Manage Your Mind
  • Assess Your Anxiety
  • Rebuild Your Resilience
  • Thrive! After beating Anxiety

You can learn about this approach here:

So, understanding your anxiety and answering the question of: “Why Do I Feel Anxious for No Reason” falls under the Assess your anxiety category.

You can read about it here:

50 shades of anxiety: How to identify and destroy yours?

A quick recap is this:

Anxiety can take many forms.

If you follow the link above you will see that there are many types of anxieties based on what causes it.

For example, some people have agoraphobia (anxiety when you’re outside). Others have claustrophobia (anxiety when you’re in tight spaces).

You also need to understand your triggers.

Is your anxiety caused by stressful life events (starting a new job, being promoted or demoted), physical illness, financial concerns?

Next, it helps to understand whether or not you’re naturally more anxious.

Anxiety is heritable, and so sometimes your life has nothing wrong with it, but you still feel anxious and keep asking yourself: “Why Do I Feel Anxious for No Reason”.

This was my case.

My life, by all measures, was fine.

Yet I was stressed out of my mind by every little thing.

It also helps to understand which of the two types of anxiety is your primary one.

Is it amygdala-based, or cortex-based anxiety?

Amygdala-based anxiety manifests itself in sudden and strong emotions that come out of nowhere.

Cortex-based anxiety usually originates from the way you think.

They, of course, can invade your mind at the same time.

So, there are many reasons for anxiety.

And even if you don’t know why you’re feeling anxious, there’s always a reason.

Otherwise your body wouldn’t be anxious.

Anxiety is energy-intensive.

You know how exhausting anxiety is. So, your body wouldn’t waste all that energy for no reason (from its perspective).
